Re: Religious freedom office seems more about politics than foreign policy, Feb. 21.
Religious freedom means freedom to live the way we want to live. Freedom of conscience. Freedom to think and dream and believe and feel how we want. Imposing one way of life on another person or people only leads to harm and discord. Without fail, intolerance always leads to brutality and tragedy.
It was intolerance that led to my family coming to Canada in 1989, when I was barely two years old. We were persecuted in Pakistan for being members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community; the same community whose mosque and community centre, Tahir Hall, Prime Minister Stephen Harper chose for this week's announcement of Canada's Office of Religious Freedom.
Upon witnessing this occasion, I was reminded of something the late Mirza Tahir Ahmad, previous head of the community, once said, "My prayer is that Canada becomes all the world and all the world becomes Canada."
In July 2012, during the inauguration of this very same Tahir Hall, our current leader, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, said, "For 'the entire world to become Canada,' we must keep a vigilant eye on all forms of extremism ..."
Amen.
