Chinese government workers accused a woman of violating China's one-child policy before running over and killing her toddler.
A 13-month-old boy was run over and killed by Chinese officials who had confronted his parents for violating the country's one-child policy, Agence France Presse reported. There has been growing resentment in China against the strict family planning rules.
After the baby's death on Monday, thousands of residents protested outside local government offices in Wenzhou city, BBC News reported.
Two people, including the driver, have been arrested in connection to the death, Xinhua news agency reported. A total of 11 officials were there on Monday before the tragedy, trying to persuade the baby's parents to pay fines for their third child.
"We were required to pay 30,000 to 40,000 yuan, otherwise they would have detained us," the father told Xinhua. He said that his baby was dropped to the ground during a fight with the officials, and he couldn't pull his child out of the way before the vehicle started up. The father's hands also have injuries, Xinhua reported.
