Established since 2007 in Guyana  the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has just opened a cultural center in Matoury. An imam is now present in order to "guide the Muslims of Guyana".

A small house half hidden behind blue tarps at the end of a dirt path at RN2 Matoury. This is where the Muslim Cultural Center of Ahmadiyya has opened its doors in the end of 2012. The place is confined. In the main room, infront of a small desk on which a laptop is on, a photograph of the Mecca above two prayer rugs is hanged. In the back of the room, there is a sofa and a coffee table.

"The place is provisional, we are actually looking for a house in Cayenne" mentions Ismael Bruant, president of the Ahmadiyya Association in Guyane. Beside him, the imam Siddique Ahmad Misnawar approves. After spending ten years in Africa, he arrived in Guyana in December 2012 : "to guide the association and guide all the Muslims in Guyana that is to say a thousand.

"LOVE FOR ALL HATRED FOR NONE"

Ahmadiyya is a progressive movement of Islam which promotes the sanctity of life, peace and tolerance. This is the message that the imam wants to give by conveying the motto of his association " Love for All, Hatred for None".

"This is the true message of Islam. Ahmadiyya gives its modern vision/approach. We emphasize education", says the Imam.

"Women also have all the space they want in the Ahmadiyya Community" adds Nadia Lebard, in-charge of the women's education.

A duty she would handle even better when the association will find more suitable locals in order to welcome new members. For now, they are forty members but with the arrival of the imam, the association will get more active and organise conferences and meetings. "The center in not a place of worship" the imam specifies "it is a place of mutual understanding where we invite everybody whether they are Muslims or not or whether they are believers or not ".

A recent movement of Islam

The Ahmadiyya movement has emerged in India at the end of the XIXth century. It is based on the arrival of a Messiah (messenger), the Imam Mahdi, announced in the Quran. Currently, the fifth Khalifa – successor of the Messiah – is leading the worldwide community from London. The Ahmadiyya association reports 120 million followers in the world. It is also present in Suriname and Brazil. It exists in Guyana since 2007.
