“Show that you care for the school and developments of students rather than being a routine enforcer of school rules. Set a direction for the year and deal with crises.”

Ten students of Ahmadiyya Muslim College at Narere, Nasinu, have been awarded scholarships this year.
This is because of their hard work last year.

They were awarded the scholarships by the Ahmadiya Muslim Jamat during the college’s prefects’ induction ceremony on Wednesday.

College principal Wasu Deo said the students, from different forms, finished first in their exams last year.

“It is the management’s annual incentive to students to encourage them to study hard and get better results,” Mr Deo said.

“We are grateful that we have some college friends from church groups and organisations like the Bayly Welfare. They always come every year and help support needy children. There are several organisations and individuals whom we like to thank for helping our children in their education.”

Mr Deo said their prefects, who were inducted this week, had been challenged to lead by example.
The chief guest was the director of secondary school education in Fiji, Jai Narayan.

He echoed Government’s commitment for compulsory education for children in Fiji.

“Secondary school education plays a vital role in shaping the future of societies and providing a pathway towards a sustained career for young professionals and aspirants. The priority of Government is making Fiji a knowledged-based society,” Mr Narayan said.

“Show that you care for the school and developments of students rather than being a routine enforcer of school rules. Set a direction for the year and deal with crises,” he told the prefects.

The headboy, Osea Tikoidavuilevu, is from Levuka-i-Daku, Matuku, Lau. His parents are villagers and he has been looked after by guardians since starting at Form Three. He called on parents to support their children who are prefects.

“We have been appointed prefects at school and at home, parents do not support us. This is especially for iTaukei families. The parents are engaged in other activities and often do not prioritise their children’s education. Please respect the decision and the responsibilities given to us by the school and help us carry out our duties,” Osea said.

Headgirl Shayal Shalini Kumar said she wants students to respect one another. She wants to become a teacher after leaving school.
