Pakistan: Karachi Killing Spree, 500 Die In 72 Days


According to statistics available with CNBC Pakistan, Karachiites witnessed killings of cousin of provincial minister Sharjeel Memon, Presidential award winner Hakim Barkati, and several other high profile killings.

KARACHI: The killing spree continued and even registered rise in Karachi as an estimated 500 people have lost their lives, including 30 policemen, in 72 days of this year.

According to statistics available with CNBC Pakistan, Karachiites witnessed killings of cousin of provincial minister Sharjeel Memon, Presidential award winner Hakim Barkati, and several other high profile killings.

Besides that, an average of 14 people was killed daily on 4th, 22nd, 26th and 30th of January this year.

Police DSP and three other policemen lost their lives on January 25 in a blast that took place in Quiadabad area.

In February, some 100 people have been gunned down in targeted killings, including lawyer and policemen.

On February 27, two police stations were attacked with hand grenades in the city, while two policemen were shot dead in Manghopir and Baldia area.

On March 3, four policemen were killed by unidentified armed assailants at Super highway, while the same day a deadly blast took lives of 50 people in Abbas town.

The killing spree continues unabated till to date.

Only yesterday, four policemen including a Sub Inspector were assassinated in separate attacks at Kala Pul and Nazimabad areas.

The recent surge in violence has led common man to think again and again about his own security at a time when even personnel of law enforcement agencies were not safe on the city roads.
