LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has granted bail to a female blasphemy accused as the police could not establish her link with the occurrence.
According to the FIR registered on the complaint of Ibrar Ahmed, secretary Ahle Sunnat Pakistan, at Police Station New Town Rawalpindi on November 11, 2012 under section 295-C of PPC and section 25-C of Telegraph Act, the accused had sent blasphemous SMS and made such calls to the complainant.
In the investigation it was revealed that the SIM card which was used for SMS and calls was registered with the name of accused Ghazala Khan, a Christian resident of Lahore, and one Zafar Bhatti had made these calls and sent SMS. However the police after arresting Bhatti, recovered the mobile and SIM card from his custody.
Appearing before the court, Ghazala through her counsel Robinson and Riffat Mariam, submitted that on November 11, 2012 she had come to know with the raid of the police at her house that an FIR under section 295-C of PPC and section 25-C of Telegraph Act was registered against her.
They submitted that she had property dispute with her relatives who had been extending life threats to her. They added that she had also filed complaints in this regard to the police, record of which was also available with her.
They said it was true that SIM from which the blasphemous SMS and calls were made was registered in his name. They said the accused had managed to get the SIM registered in her name by stealing her national identity card and made blasphemous SMS and calls. They said she was innocent and had no relation with the case. She said she was being victimized on the basis of religious faith.
While holding the proceedings, the judge asked the investigation officer to establish like of Ms Khan with the occurrence. As he failed to establish her link with the occurrence, the judge granted her bail.
Compensation case: Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan of the Lahore High Court on Monday, while hearing a contempt petition, sought personal appearance of the Bank of Punjab (BoP) president for not paying compensation to cameraman Aftab Shah of a private television channel, who was critically injured during media coverage of a marathon race in 2012.
The judge directed the president to appear on June 7. Petitioner counsel Aftab Bajwa submitted because the petitioner was injured during the duty, the sports board had announced a compensation of one million rupees for him. He said that the government had also ordered the Bank of Punjab to ensure release of the payment.
He had approached the court as almost a year had gone by but the bank had failed to make payment or respond to his repeated reminders. He said that the LHC on March 4 had ordered the bank to ensure payments of compensation to the petitioner but that order was not complied.
He requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the officials concerned and issue directions for payment of compensation to the petitioner.
