Point of view: Society built on respect
As an Ahmadi Muslim, I believe that Sikhs have the right to wear a turban while playing soccer. Denying them that right goes against Canadian values.

Re: “Quebec turban debate turns into familiar political game; Each party is playing its part to perfection,” by Andrew Coyne, June 13.
Religious symbols allow us to express ourselves and our faith. Fortunately, in Canada, people are allowed to wear religious symbols without discrimination. Christians can wear a cross, Muslim women can wear a hijab and Sikhs can wear a turban.
The Quebec Soccer Federation’s initial decision to ban players who wear turbans, which it has subsequently reversed, was disappointing.
If an official, global soccer organization such as FIFA can accommodate specially designed sports hijabs, why couldn’t the Quebec Soccer Federation allow turbans?
As an Ahmadi Muslim, I believe that Sikhs have the right to wear a turban while playing soccer. Denying them that right goes against Canadian values.
Mirza Masroor Ahmad, leader of Ahmadiyya Muslim community, says, “We must leave aside our personal ... interests for the greater good and instead ... establish mutual relations that are based entirely on justice.”
That is the way to build a stronger Canada.
