A ban on religious clothing in public as proposed by the Parti Quebecois goes against Canada's glowing reputation as a country where freedom of every type reigns supreme.
My family and I left our homeland of Pakistan, where our beliefs of Ahmadiyya Islam are considered heretical and punishable by law if practised openly. We left everything behind for Canada, because this is where we are able to practise our religion openly and freely. There are countless other immigrants like us who have come here from around the world for the same freedom.
As long as Quebec is part of Canada, such a ban is unacceptable and ought to be overruled federally. Canada's reputation as a tolerant and accepting people has already taken a hit because of Quebec in recent years. Enough is enough.
