For the last four years, Kamal Ahmad Rahman has been remembering the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by doing what he can to save lives in their honor.
To do that, he's inviting people today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to his convenience store, Easy Shop off of F.M. 2818 in Bryan, to donate blood.
Rahman is one of many Ahmadiyya Muslim Community members across the country organizing blood drives during the nationwide campaign, "Muslims for Life," which began Aug. 11 and wraps up Oct. 11.
Those killed or injured in the Boston Marathon bombing also are being honored through the campaign this year.
Last year, Rahman said, 425 pints of blood were collected locally, an amount he considered a success.
"The thing is, even if I can get one person to come in and donate blood and that saves my kid's life or your brother's life, any life, then I have done my job," Rahman said.
The father of four -- his youngest a 7-year-old and the oldest a junior at Texas A&M -- speaks fondly when discussing Bryan-College Station, the area where he's raised his family.
"We live in such a beautiful community," Rahman said. "The only reason I live here is because it's such a loving and diversified community."
When asked if he thought the situation in Syria could affect turnout this year, Rahman said he initially did have concerns, which he took to his parents and mosque leader.
"I was talking to my mosque leader and he said, 'Kamal, you've got to have faith in God. Our job is to do our best and let God do the rest,'" Rahman said.
In doing his best to attract donors, Rahman will offer free food, drinks and T-shirts.
A drawing for $50 in-store credit will be part of the event. Easy Shop is located at 1910 Labrisa Drive in Bryan.
