Responding to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and this year's Boston Marathon bombings, the Canton Police Department is teaming up with the American Red Cross and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for a blood drive called “Muslims for Life.”

“Our goal is to inform the world that the perpetrators of the horrific attacks on our country 12 years ago and on Boston four months ago do not represent Islam or Muslims, that Islam stands for peace and values all human life,” Ahmadiyya Muslim Community spokesman Masroor A. Sajid said in a statement.

Global leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mirza Masroor Ahmad condemned the Boston attack during his first ever visit of the US West Coast in May, according to the statement.

The blood drive will be held at the Canton Public Library at 786 Washington St. on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Canton police officers will be there and several will be giving blood, according to Lieutenant Thomas Keleher. He added that police had been getting the word out to residents in town.

"We're hoping for a big day tomorrow," Keleher said.

This year’s “Muslim’s for Life” drive is the third annual event, and spans across the nation. In the past two years, 23,500 units of blood were collected, potentially helping to save more than 70,000 lives, according to the statement
