Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today donated blood as part of the third annual “Muslims for Life” nationwide blood drive. A partnership of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA and the American Red Cross, this year’s campaign honors both the victims of 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing.

“Twelve years ago, terrorists took the lives of thousands of Americans in New York City, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania, then again this year in Boston,” says Speier. “Those extremists also hijacked the faith of Islam, a religion with hundreds of millions of peaceful observers. In remembrance of the lives lost and the families torn apart by those senseless acts, I hope others will join me in donating blood to a life-saving, nationwide movement. Every pint collected can save three lives and heal many more.”

The “Muslims for Life” campaign has set a goal to collect 12,000 pints of blood this year across America. Established in 2011 as part of the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, the campaign ran in over 200 locations and resulted in 11,803 pints being collected. To date, “Muslims for Life” has collected over 25,000 blood donations to save up to 75,000 lives.
