Ahmadiyya Times Note: Rana Tanveer Ahmad, who covers the persecution and minority rights beat for The Express Tribune, a well-respected English language daily newspaper of Pakistan, has received threats to his life, apparently from some religious extremist elements in Pakistan.

According to a Pakistani newspaper, Daily Times, report (posted below), Tanveer was told anonymously, "...you will be killed as being an apostate you deserve death.”

Tanveer, who was first publically rebuked by mullah Tahir Ashrafi, chairman of the Pakistani clerics' council, about a month ago for over-covering Ahamdis matters, has now been anonymously advised to 'seek his forgiveness.'

In a public chastisement of Rana Tanveer via Twitter posts, Ashrafi had directly called out Rana Tanveer for his coverage of the news about Ahmadis, reminding the reporter, 'your beginning and end' (awalo akhar) is well clear now.

"Just be watchful, it will serve you well," Asharfi threatened the reporter after posting a string of over a dozen Twitter posts on September 13, 2013.

It is of note here that Ashrafi has issued threats of physical harm in the past also.

In 2010 Ashrafi was seen issuing public threats to late Shahbad Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities' Affairs in Pakistan, for trying to rally support to change certain religious laws of Pakistan.

According to some news reports and video evidence in 2010, within a few weeks of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Massacre of 28th May, several clerics had held a conference to tone down the resulting sympathetic rhetoric for Ahamdis in few liberal corners of Pakistan and mullah Ashrafi used the opportunity to issue physical threats to Minister Bhatti.

According to a YouTube video mullah Ashrafi was seen threatening Bhati, proclaiming that for anyone attempting to reverse Islamic laws, 'we will break his arms, gouge out his eye, cut his tongue,  and make him a slave of bin-Laden.'

Shahbaz Bhatti was later murdered in broad day light in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

LAHORE: The Express Tribune Chief Reporter Rana Tanveer on Thursday received a threatening letter for covering minorities.

The one-page letter, bearing stamps of a Multan post office and Lahore Garden Town post office, bore threats and termed Tanveer “apostate” by accusing him of favouring minorities, especially Ahmadis and Christians.

The letter, which started with “Allah-o-Akbar” read; “Rana Tanveer enough is enough. Your favour to Ahmadis and Christians is increasing and now it is my firm belief that you are not a Muslim. You have turned to be an apostate by writing against Islam and in favour of ‘anti Islam’.”It added, “We know your purpose of doing such but now it is better for you to stop writing ‘against’ Islam and in favour of Qadianis and for correction of your belief seek your forgiveness from Allah. If you continue this practice, you will be killed as being an apostate you deserve death.”

The letter said that in defiance “you will be hit from where you cannot even imagine”. The writer wrote his name as ‘Mard-e-Mujahid’ at the end of the letter.

The letter sent on the newspaper’s official address – 229-A Ferozepur Road Near Kalma Chowk – is written in Urdu language on an old and rusty page. It seemed that writing on the letter and on its envelope is not same.

Rana Tanveer said that he always observed objectivity during his professional duties. He said being a Muslim, he cannot even think of writing against Islam.

He added that whatever he writes is based on facts and being a professional journalist it is his duty to do factual reporting. He said although he is covering beat of minorities for about four years, he had never received such a letter. He said it might be result of somebody’s personal grudge against him.

  1. Why do they hate us (Ahmadis) so much???

If we say that we are Muslims and we recite the kalima then who are they to say otherwise?
Why cant they leave that to Allah the Almighty?
After all he is the best of Judge!
