A Muslim women’s group is among those marking Mitzvah Day this weekend by taking part in the Sunshine to Seniors project.
The Recorder has supported Mitzvah Day for the past three years and got involved in the Sunshine to Seniors project with a visit to Seabrooke Manor, Lavender Place, Ilford.
Editor Chris Carter led a team to sing and dance with the nursing home ladies and gents in aid of the Mitzvah Day celebrations.
The charity day on Sunday is celebrated in 20 countries and aims to promote social action and giving.
And now the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association women’s group will also spread some friendship and happiness by visiting the Abbey Care Complex, Abbey Road, Ilford, and Pinewood Care Home, Manford Way, Chigwell, on Sunday.
Secretary Samina Siddiqi said the idea of Mitzvah Day resonated with her group as their motto is “Love for all. Hatred for none”.
“Islamophobia has got everyone scared and we’re trying to get the real message out there about friendship,” she said.
“We’re the women’s wing of the group and we’re also challenging other incorrect stereotypes by showing that we have our own lives and go out to work too.
“We have 15 members going to two care homes on Sunday to talk with and give a bit of company to the older people.
“We do a lot of charity work throughout the year and we’re delighted to be getting involved in Mitzvah Day.”
Ilford South MP Mike Gapes is also supporting the day.
“I know that many thousands of people in Ilford, Redbridge and all over the country will be giving their time to help others,” said the Labour MP.
“Over the past eight years, Mitzvah Day has grown significantly from roots here to become a world-wide initiative.
“It brings people together from all generations and different faiths to help each other and our communities. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved.”
The day was founded in 2005 and became a registered charity in 2008.
