Bangladesh has executed the Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, who was convicted of atrocities in the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.

He is the first person convicted by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to be executed.

The ICT was set up in 2010 to investigate abuses committed during the 1971 conflict, in which some estimate three million people were killed.

Mullah was a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.

His trial earlier in the year sparked protests from Jamaat supporters.

Several other leading figures in the party have also been convicted by the tribunal, and are set to be hanged.

Mullah had been scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday, before gaining a reprieve pending a last-minute appeal against his death sentence.

The Bangladeshi Supreme Court dismissed the appeal earlier on Thursday.

Analysis

There was a lot of drama in Dhaka before the execution of Abdul Kader Mullah.

His family members met him for a final time late on Thursday. It appeared the government rushed through the execution after days of legal wrangling.

The execution is likely to trigger further tensions in Bangladesh. Mr Mullah's party said the death sentence was politically motivated and there would be dire consequences if it went ahead.

Bangladesh's major Western partners will view the execution with concern. Supporters of the trial would say this is a historic moment as it came just days before Bangladesh's victory day on 16 December.

But many are concerned that this could polarise the country further.

  1. It is such a childish view of the world by some members of our political elite praising JI leader Mollah. Didn't we Pakistanis already know that massive atrocities were perpetrated in the name of Pakistan by Armed forces and allied minority parties in East Pakistan. Yes, we need to find a way forward but not by denying acts of brutalities in our history. Our present is very much a manifest witness to our attitudes quite the same when dealing with such issues today. People go and kill Christians, Ahmadis and Shias even if a religious leader without proof may only state that a Christian has burnt some Quranic verses, or Ahmadi has read Quran or a Shia has said something about companions of prophet Muhammad. We consider every problem faced by Pakistan today as a conspiracy by US, Jews or 'Qadianis' rather finding its real causes. PTI is supporting Mollah and consider him as Shaheed-e-Pakistan, which is amazing. PTI should ask Mollah’s family first if they want to be associated with Pakistan any more before labelling him Pakistani. Pakistanis did commit huge blunders both politically and militarily in East Pakistan leading to violence and war. The countries, both Pakistan and Bangladesh, have moved on since then however, we must admit those mistakes and rectify our attitudes. One among those attitudes is to admit that religious parties have resorted to violence more often than others and must be condemned for this. JI has such a hisotry under its belt both in East Pakistan and West Pakistan.
