THE Ceremonial Mayor of Hartlepool Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher’s charity fund has topped £25,000 thanks to a £500 donation from a Muslim organisation.
The mayor was given the donation from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK when its North-East President Rashid Amini visited the Civic Centre together with some of his colleagues.
The Association is a UK-wide Muslim charity with more than 25,000 members and more than 100 branches.
This year it is celebrating its centenary and has marked the occasion with a number of charity fundraising events around the country, including a peace walk which raised more than £250,000. It is helping more than 100 national and local good causes and also making donations to various mayors’ charities.
During the visit to the Civic Centre, the association also presented the mayor with an English translation of the Holy Qur’an.
Mr Amini said: “We love Hartlepool and its people and are committed to doing everything we can to help the local community and to spreading the word far and wide about the town’s achievements.”
Councillor Akers-Belcher said: “What makes Hartlepool great is its diversity – people of different backgrounds and beliefs, all with a shared wish to do their very best for the town and its residents. This is a very great strength.”
The Mayor’s chosen charities are Macmillan Cancer Support, the Pansies Breast Cancer Support Group and the Denise Taylor Cancer Trust.
