Eight Ahamdi Muslims including their local president have been arrested for their faith by the Palestinian police acting under the PLO Authority, it has been learned.
According to the scant details emerging from the local community members, Ahmadis were imprisoned in Hebron on Saturday pursuant to influences exerted by the local Muslim ‘Mufti’ of Hebron.
Names of the detained men have been withheld in consideration for the safety of their families.
The arrested group includes six members who had recently joined the community and the Mufti has charged Ahmadis are spreading their beliefs in Hebron.
There are many Ahmadi families in Hebron and the community has existed in Palestine since 1920s.
The accused were due in court today to settle the accusations from clerics, however, according to the latest report, the arraignments were postponed and the accused have been sent back into extended police custody.
