A group of young Muslims from Sheffield hosted a commemorative lunch on Sunday 30th March to celebrate their charitable work and pledged to continue providing future support to the community in Yorkshire.
The event was organised by the Sheffield chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) and was attended by the Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, representatives of several Charity organisations as well as the general public.
The event was used to showcase the wide range of activities performed by AMYA volunteers including Tree Planting, Blood donation drives, running a poppy appeal in support of the Royal British Legion and raising several thousand pounds for various UK charities. These efforts are part of a nationwide campaign by the AMYA to contribute to the country in different ways.
During the opening address, The Sheffield President of the AMYA said: “the efforts of our members are a mark of good citizenship and a testament to the Islamic edict of demonstrating loyalty to your country and serving the society”. He also quoted a saying of the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, in which he said:“My desire, my wish and my objective is serving humanity. It is my job, my faith, my inspiration and my way”.
The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Vickie Priestley congratulated members of the AMYA for their commitment and dedication in serving their community and promoting peace. The Lord Mayor was presented with a cheque of £1000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, which was her nominated charity for 2013.
The charity representatives in attendance, including Macmillan Cancer Research, Red Cross and Well Wish Society also recognized the efforts of AMYA volunteers and thanked them for their diligent efforts.
