In many other countries, we build access to clean water and reliable electricity. We attempt to remove suffering, so hateful ideologies cannot take hold in impoverished communities.

In the early hours of May 26, gunmen horrifically murdered a visiting American cardiologist in Rabwah, Pakistan.

Dr. Mehdi Ali was visiting his native country to volunteer at the Tahir Heart Institute, a premier hospital operated by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. His crime was none other than being an Ahmadi Muslim, a member of a minority sect of Islam.

Such attacks are not new, as many Ahmadi Muslim physicians face regular death threats while others have also been tragically killed. Despite the injustice of state-sponsored persecution, we do not retaliate.

We realize that often the perpetrators of these attacks are young indoctrinated men.

The head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad said following another brutal killing in 2010, “Due to poverty these people are taken in childhood by criminals who brainwash them, give them false hopes of paradise and make them carry out (such) attacks, whereas (they) in fact incurs God’s displeasure.”

We instead fight this injustice as taught to us by the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings be upon him), with mercy and forbearance. In following his example, we educate those poor communities by opening up secular schools and clinics.

In many other countries, we build access to clean water and reliable electricity. We attempt to remove suffering, so hateful ideologies cannot take hold in impoverished communities.

Moreover, while we do feel sorrow after such deaths, we feel even great pain because these attacks, as explained by Mirza Masroor Ahmad, “Bring the name of our master, the benefactor of mankind, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) in disrepute.”

So we will not stop fighting for the freedom of conscious and we will continue to fight injustice with prayers and steadfastness.

May you rest in peace, Dr. Ali.
