Perspective: Islam hijacked
Numerous atrocities committed in the name of Islam around the world should be seen as what they are - the acts of groups or individuals following their own path and in no way following the actual teaching of Islam.

Re: "Not so peaceful," Letter, May 12.
It is thinking like J.J. Smith's, "It's safe, therefore, to conclude that Islam is clearly not a religion of peace - quite the contrary," that we western Muslims do not agree with. Islam is a peaceful religion, but the people who are hijacking it are not.
I believe Smith is actually describing Third World countries instead of Muslim countries. Third World countries have oppression, poverty, illiteracy, etc. Does that make all Third World countries, Muslim countries? Tens of thousands of Muslims are fleeing Christian militias in Central African Republic. A judge in India just ruled that it's legal for husbands to rape their wives.
Do these actions make Christianity non-peaceful or all Indians inhumane? No.
Numerous atrocities committed in the name of Islam around the world should be seen as what they are - the acts of groups or individuals following their own path and in no way following the actual teaching of Islam.
