Letter: Discrimination continues in Pakistan against Ahmadiyya Muslim community

Pakistan's constitution prohibits Ahmadis from practicing Islam, going as far as to criminalize any act of worship. On July 27, a mob murdered three Ahmadis by setting fire to their homes, and injured several more.

There was a time in America when discrimination was especially common. The most obvious example would be the extreme racial prejudices in the 50's and 60's, when black men and women were thought of as inferior by much of the American public. Their lives were filled with danger, as they were often the targets of mobs and riots.

This is what the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a small sect of Islam, faces in Pakistan today. Pakistan's constitution prohibits Ahmadis from practicing Islam, going as far as to criminalize any act of worship. On July 27, a mob murdered three Ahmadis by setting fire to their homes, and injured several more. Police stood by, doing little to stop the deaths.

Deaths in the Ahmadiyya community are not uncommon in Pakistan. But as we have done for over 100 years, we will continue to be patient, spread our message, and pray for God's help.
