Sir: In 2009 I decided not to celebrate August 14th to show solidarity with the nine innocent Christians who were killed and their homes set on fire in Gojra. I flew Pakistan’s flag at half-mast, did not hear national songs or the national anthem. I had been sad, ashamed and deeply distressed. I called up all my Christian friends to apologise and express my grief, pain and sorrow.

In 2010 I again could not get myself to celebrate August 14th because of the 94 people who had been killed during Friday prayers in a multiple attack on two places of worship of the Ahmadiyya community in Lahore.
In 2011 the killing of 42 Shias in five different terrorist attacks in various parts of Balochistan stopped me from celebrating August 14th.

In 2012 I was saddened once again by the killing of 91 Shias in Chilas, Mastung, Quetta and Parachinar. I had no reason to feel proud on August 14th.

By August 14th, 2013, I had been drained by a twin suicide bombing that killed at least 78 people at a church service in Peshawar, in what is believed to be the country’s deadliest attack on Christians. Similarly, as many as 182 Hazara Shias were killed in two different suicide attacks in Quetta. Then at least 48 people, women, men and children, were killed and over 135 injured in a massive bombing in Karachi’s Shia-dominated neighbourhood of Abbas Town.

Comes 2014 and four members of the Ahmadiyya community are killed in Gujranwala on July 27 by an angry mob, allegedly over blasphemy. Those who died in the attack included a 55-year-old woman Bashiran, a minor girl Kainat, a seven year old girl Hira and an unborn child who died due to suffocation. This year as well I had no reason to celebrate August 14th.

In a country where the minorities are constantly counting their dead ones, only stone hearted people could celebrate either Eid or August 14th.

  1. And what before that....in a span of 5-6 years you have come to realise that Pakistan is not the place for you...How interesting...either you are Ill informed or want to portray pakistan as a Blood thirsty nation...Agreed there are some Miscreants in the society...and they cause damage the good name...but they do not necessarily represent our sentiments too...Its like saying that Osama Bin Laden was a representative of all of the Muslims...which is incorrect...Either Shape up or Ship out...We will fight our own wars..
