Two inspirational Sheffielders are in the running to attend one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the country’s calendar.
Claire Bradwell, of Wadsley, and Shahzad Athar, of Page Hall, have each been shortlisted for Pride of Britain Awards.
Claire, aged 30, is one of five finalists for The Prince’s Trust Young Achiever award, while Shahzad, 34, is nominated for his fundraising efforts.
Claire was once told she would never have children after suffering cervical cancer - but is now mum to twin boys and a girl, Daisy, who has the rare condition hip dysplasia.
It meant Daisy had to spend much of her time in a hip cast - and it was that which sparked Claire’s entrepreneurial inspiration. Claire came up with a special chair, the Hip Rocker, which lets Daisy sit up safely while in her cast.
Claire’s business now ships across the world, with orders coming from America, New Zealand and across Europe.
Claire said: “In the space of six months I went from not knowing if I was going to live or die, and leave three young children, to running my own business and helping other parents with my products. It’s amazing.”
Shahzad, meanwhile, has been a youth worker at Sheffield’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association since 2009, when he first arrived in the city from Pakistan.
As a regional youth leader, he donates six to eight hours of his time most days to the AMYA, working with seven to 15-year-olds as well as adults.
He helps members of the association integrate through activities and fundraisers that benefit local communities as well as numerous charities.
Shahzad said: “It’s so nice to be recognised, even though I don’t do it for awards. I’m humbled and honoured to know I’ve been shortlisted.
“I only hope I can continue to make a positive contribution to the society I live in, and give back to the country that allows me to live in peace.”
A short film about Shahzad will be shown on Calendar News in the next week, before a judging panel picks regional winners to attend the Pride of Britain Awards in London in October.
Kamal Astab, a regional youth leader for AMYA, said: “Shahzad is a very warm-hearted person who gives his time to help as many good causes as possible.”
