Event hosted by Ahmadiyya Muslims for Life and the American Red Cross

Washington, D.C.—Earlier today, U.S. Representative Tom Petri (R-WI) attended an event in Washington, D.C. to collect blood donations to honor the memories of those lost during the 9/11 attacks.

Speaking at the beginning of the event, Petri said that he was “…trying to support the good works of the Ahmadiyya community. They’ve been good citizens in my part of Wisconsin.” The Ahmadiyya Muslim community sponsored the event with the American Red Cross.

Petri also emphasized the strong bipartisan support an event like this draws as he joined U.S. Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN) in addressing the crowd and volunteers before donating blood. Petri also donated blood in 2011 to mark the 10-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

“It’s for a good cause, and I figured I have plenty of healthy blood, why not donate some so others have a better chance at life,” Petri remarked after the event.

The “Muslims for Life” campaign began in 2011 to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and collect blood donations to help others. Over the past three years, the event has successfully collected 33,000 pints of blood and saved over 100,000 lives, event organizers said.
