Canada: 9th Annual World Religions Conference in Red Deer Draws Full House at Red Deer College

"Not all wars have been religious wars. Politics, fear and hatred of outsiders, imperialism, and economics share the blame. But too often, religion has played its part either as the chief cause of war, or as handmaiden to some political agenda."

Resolution adopted to condemn the recent attacks on Canadian soldiers and one minute silence observed for the victims

The 9th Annual World Religions Conference was a success at Arts Centre Mainstage Red Deer College where the students, academics, and citizens from all walks of life packed the 550-seat Arts Centre mainstage to its capacity.

The theme of the conference held on Monday, October 27, 2014, was the “Role of Religion in World Peace”.

This topic of the conference became even more relevant due to recent attacks on Canadian soldiers in Montreal and Parliament Hill.

To condemn the attacks and cold blooded murders of Canadian soldiers a resolution was approved unanimously by the participants expressing solidarity was expressed with the families and friends of victims. A group of young kids sung the National Anthem after which a one minute silence was observed to honour the victims of Montreal and Ottawa attacks.

The president of RDC in his opening remarks lauded the services of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at to promote the interfaith harmony and highlighted the importance of this conference in Red Deer College and the community at large.

Dr. Guillermo Barron, Moderator of the event commented in his remarks that, "Not all wars have been religious wars. Politics, fear and hatred of outsiders, imperialism, and economics share the blame. But too often, religion has played its part either as the chief cause of war, or as handmaiden to some political agenda."

Scholars representing Atheism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam presented their respective point of view.

Dr Mohyuddin Mirza, presenting Islamic perspective, said that Islam regards civic duty as a requirement of faith and it is a religious obligation upon Muslims to be loyal and to serve and protect the country in which they are living.

Dr Mirza quoted the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamā’at, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad. “To kill and to violently oppose is not an act of Islam but it is the act of those people who do not believe in God and do not even possess the most basic human values or decency.”

He said that violence has no basis in any religion.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at and Red Deer College expressed thanks to Red Deerians for attending the conference in large numbers and making this event a success.

  1. I was in attendance. I was impressed by the genuineness of the people listening. Later on many of them mentioned that this is the first time they have learned about the peaceful Islam. This symposium was a clear indication that how Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat viewpoint is being understood more and more. Thanks to the organizers for this wonderful evening.
