Report Excerpts

The strongest weapon to fight radicalization of citizens is community engagement, say city police in the wake of allegations that an Edmonton-based woman has allegedly been recruiting online for ISIS.

A Wednesday CBC report with anonymous sources states that a 23-year-old Canadian woman went to Syria last summer to join up with ISIS after taking an online course to study the Qur’an taught by a woman based in Edmonton.

City police Insp. Dan Jones with the investigative support branch would not comment specifically on the report but said police are engaged with the community to stop radicalization of locals. Recruiting for terrorist organizations is no different than gangs, he added.

Mohyuddin Mirza with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community hasn’t heard of the woman trying to recruit others in the community, but said action should be taken against her immediately.

“I think that type of action should be condemned in any possible way. We should confront these people why they are doing this to the young minds,” said Mirza, noting the Hadi Mosque, 7005 98 Ave., is having an open house March 1 to counter any Islamophobia feelings in the community.

Those who attend the mosque regularly are on alert for anyone showing signs of radicalized behaviour, and they encourage parents to be on the look out as well.

“I know the young minds are very susceptible and they think that going and fighting for ISIS they will go to heaven or some sort. That is not what Islam teaches...For 125 years [history of the Ahmadiyya community,] we have not produced any extremist or terrorist of any type because we believe Islam is a peaceful religion.”
...
In the CBC report, the young woman’s family said the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had been tracking her for nearly two years.
