Islamic State group militants have abducted at least 150 people from Assyrian Christian villages in north-eastern Syria, activists said on Tuesday.
The extremist fighters swept through the Assyrian villages, nestled along the banks of the Khabur River near the town of Tel Tamr in Hasaka province, around dawn on Monday.
FRANCE 24 spoke with two Syrian activists in the region, as well as a source close to the Islamic State (IS) group, also known as ISIS and ISIL, who confirmed on Tuesday that at least 37 people had been abducted.
That number later rose to at least 150 people, including women and elderly, a Syrian Christian group representing several NGOs inside and outside the country said late on Tuesday.
“We have verified at least 150 people who have been abducted from sources on the ground,” Bassam Ishak, President of the Syriac National Council of Syria, whose own family is from Hasaka, told Reuters from the Jordanian capital of Amman.
The kidnappings were initially reported by activist group A Demand For Action, which focuses on religious minorities in the Middle East, as well as the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
