A former Crystal Palace supporters' pub could be turned into a mosque after its new owners submitted a planning application to the council.

Ansarullah, an auxiliary organisation of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has applied to convert the Portmanor, in Portland Road, into a mosque and community centre.

The pub has been shut since last May after its landlord Geoff Charles decided to leave following what he described as a "lack of support" from its owners, the pub company Punch Taverns.

It was the home of supporters' group the Holmesdale Fanatics but police had tried to have the pub's licence revoked due to what it termed as "hooliganism" at the pub.

But the council dismissed the police's application following an impassioned defence from Mr Charles and a strong reaction from Palace fans.
