Richard Seklorwu opened a new chapter in his athletics career on Saturday as he leaped 7.62 metres to record Ghana’s longest jump this year.

This was at the on-going Open Track and Field Championship being organized by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi.
About 200 athletes, drawn from the security services, student athletes and individual professional athletes are competing for honours and also make the best possible time to be selected for Ghana’s team to represent the nation at the All Africa Games, latter this year.
Seklorwu, a student of the T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (SHS), is one of the promising up and coming Ghanaian athletes and cast in the mould of one time Ghanaian legendary long jumper, Ignatius Gaisah.
In the Heats of the other events, Kate Agyemang and Happy Abruyah, both student athletes sailed through to the next stage in the Women’s 200 metre race, while Christian Afful of the Ghana Prisons and Douglas Donkor, an individual athlete, also made it to the next stage of the competition in the Men’s 200 metres.
Martha Bisa, another talented young athlete, had it easy in the Women’s 800 metres as she powered home strongly to shrug off challenge from the other competing athletes.
Dr. Mark Dzradosi, an Executive Member and National Treasurer of the GAA, told GNA Sports that, the Association had planned a total of ten competitions this year, all designed to keep athletes in good shape for future events.
The nation, he said, had high prospects in the track and field events, and stressed the need for stakeholders to invest in athletics.
