An open day by a Hartlepool mosque has been hailed a big success by organisers.

The town’s Nasir Mosque in Brougham Terrace, opened its doors to the wider community at the weekend as part of efforts to increase people’s understanding of Islam.

More than 100 people took up the offer and took tours of the purpose-built place of worship, listened to talks about Islam and enjoyed refreshments laid on.

Mosque Imam Tahir Selby said: “The open day was very successful and we had over 100 people visit and it was busy throughout the day.

“The Mayor came and we had a comments book and everyone expressed how much they enjoyed the visit and found it very informative and friendly.

“I am very thankful to everyone who attended, we also appreciate that they gave up their valuable time to visit us.”

It was the first open day the mosque had held for a number of years but more regular events are set to follow after Saturday’s success.

Mr Selby said the event was partly in response to recent terror atrocities by Islamic extremists and to dispel any misunderstandings people may have of Islam.

The mosque held a similar open day in 2009 and Mr Selby said he hopes they will now be held at least once a year as part of their role in the local community.
