An investigation has been launched by police after several Muslim graves were vandalised at a cemetery in Bulwell.

At least 10 graves in High Wood Cemetery, Low Wood Road, have been damaged – with reports of name plaques and decorative lights being ruined.

It is believed the attack happened either late on Saturday evening or during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say while damage has been caused to some non-Muslim graves, the focus of the activity is focused on the Muslim section.

Chief Superintendent Mark Holland, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This type of offence is taken very seriously and a thorough investigation is being conducted.

"Criminal damage of this nature is obviously very upsetting for the families and we are working swiftly in our efforts to identify those responsible.

"Nottinghamshire Police has been liaising closely with the Muslim community in the county since the events in Tunisia last week and we have been in close contact following the reports of these events."

Police are now increasing patrols in the area and at other cemeteries.

Graham Chapman, deputy leader at Nottingham City Council, said: "We totally condemn what has taken place.

"While we have a proud tradition in Nottingham of bringing communities together, this act is designed simply to try and divide communities in our city.

"This irresponsible act of hatred achieves absolutely nothing."

Anyone with information should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 407 of June 28. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
