Canada: Two cultures share at Pioneer Lodge

It is very important for Muslim children living in western countries to know their Islamic culture, and that they should celebrate their religious festivals while also being part of Canada.

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community celebrated the end of Ramadan by sharing their culture with seniors at Pioneer Lodge.

Eid is when Muslims break fast at the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, when Muslims around the world spend 30 days in complete fast during daylight hours.

To celebrate Eid, young members of the Muslim community gave presentations about their religion to the seniors and then served them cake.

“Today we are just came here to share our Eid with our senior people, and last Saturday we have our Eid,” said Vaqas Qureshi, organizer of the Muslim community’s youth group. “Normally we celebrate Eid with family, with family friends, with our seniors, elder, and we are so much happy to share our time with them.”

Qureshi said it is very important for Muslim children living in western countries to know their Islamic culture, and that they should celebrate their religious festivals while also being part of Canada.

“(On the) first of July we also celebrate Canada Day, we also did many activities in Bud Miller Park, so we love that,” Qureshi said.

This was the first time the Muslim community’s youth group did a presentation at the Pioneer Lodge, and Qureshi hopes to repeat the experience in the future.

About 18 of the 25 members of the community’s youth group were present for the event. In addition the children also took part in different educational, sports, and religious activities. This Saturday they will be heading to Calgary and staying at the city’s mosque for academic purposes. While there, they will also have a chance to visit the Calgary Zoo and will be writing essays about the animals they will see.

Nauras Ahmed Qureshi, one of the boys who served cake to the seniors, said he was excited about going to Calgary to see the animals at the zoo, and was glad to be sharing his culture at the Pioneer Lodge.

“I feel good because I like sharing information with other people about our community,” he said.

Vaqas Qureshi wished to thank the Pioneer Lodge for giving the Muslim community the opportunity to share their culture, and was also thankful towards his team members, such as imam Tariq Azeem.
