A group of students and teachers from Balcombe Grammar School Melbourne visited the Ahmadiyya Muslim mosque, Baitul Salam (The House of Peace) in Langwarrin on Monday 24 August 2014. Students were given a brief presentation on the basic teachings of Islam by Imam Wadood Janud, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Victoria.
The purpose of the visit is to educate students about Islam and the meaning of light in religion, as part of the upcoming Festival of Light in September.
Speaking on what light means in Islam, Imam Janud said:
“The Quran tells us that God is the light of heavens and Earth. Meaning that all creation, form the smallest of particles to the grandest of stars, has God's imprint if one truly ponders. Everything will lead you and point you towards a Creator, a Fashioner - God."Imam Janud also explained that Prophets of God are a source of light for mankind:
"When the night of ignorance is at its darkest, Prophets are sent bearing a spiritual torch and glad tidings to guide man and illuminate the path of spirituality and being one with the creator. In such darkness, Prophets of God are the true source of light and guidance. Such has been the case since time immemorial."
Imam Janud explained the basic articles of the Islamic faith and their practical implementation in a Muslim’s day-to-day life. He discussed Islamic daily prayers, fasting, Eid celebrations, Islamic concept of charity and pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj).
Imam Janud said that Islam promotes peace not only at an individual level but at a community level too. In order to maintain peace in society, Islam does not permit taking illicit drugs, drinking alcohol and gambling. Students had the opportunity to listen to the Adhan (call to prayer) and observe a Salat (Islamic mode of prayer) demonstration.
At the end of the presentation, students and teachers were invited to ask questions.
Imam Janud answered several questions about the Islamic viewpoint on illicit drugs, taking loans on interest, Quranic teachings, Islamic prayers, segregation of women in mosques and the concept of Jihad in Islam.
Students were shown an exhibition displaying various translations of the Holy Quran, the holy book of Islam. Students showed keen interest in banners quoting teachings of the Holy Quran on science, cosmology, love, brotherhood, peace and humanity.
For most students, this was their first visit to a mosque. They found the presentation by Imam Janud to be very informative and easy to understand.
A student remarked about his experience in the mosque as, “The presentation was very informative, interesting and well-presented. It was a fantastic opportunity to find out about different religions and how people pray.”
School Chaplain, Rev. Cindy Waters, said:
“Imam Janud’s presentation was very informative. He was very friendly. It was good to learn about the different aspects of faith, which was clearly explained. Students could ask questions, particularly about what light means in Islam. This is appropriate because students are encouraged to participate in Interfaith Services such as this, in the lead up to the Festival of Light.”
After hosting lunch, Imam Janud thanked the students and teachers for visiting the mosque and invited them to come again in the future.
