There was a local presence when Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada held its Jalsa Salana or Annual Convention, which is Canada's the largest National Islamic Convention on August 28-30  in Mississauga.

This year's Jalsa Salana was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The three-day event, which attracts several thousand attendees from across the globe offers a host of scholarly speeches and presentations that aim to deliver the true and peaceful message of Islam, as well as practical solutions to combat various forms of religious extremism.

Hanan Sobhi, Waseem Ahmad, and Salman Arain were among the many Muslim attendees from Georgetown.

"I have been attending this convention for the past eight years and every year I learn something new. This year was no different, as I discovered that there is no conflict in Islam between freedom of speech and freedom of religion, although extremist organizations would have you think otherwise. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at's refreshing message of pluralism, love, and tolerance is a breath of fresh air and it is something that everyone can apply to their daily lives— Muslims and non-Muslims alike!" said Hanan.

Harper’s speech to a large Muslim conference on Friday was billed as prime ministerial, not political, but he still managed to squeeze in some Conservative messaging on Canada’s fight against terrorism.  He also thanked the group for its campaign against youth radicalization.
“By your words and by your actions, Canada’s Ahmadiyya community has earned the respect and the admiration of all Canadians,” said Harper.

The President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada,  Lal Khan Malik said, “With the ongoing initiatives and efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada, this convention comes at a critical juncture given the unrest in the global Muslim community. Through this convention we hope to answer the various questions and controversies often associated to Islam.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at is a dynamic, fast-growing international revival movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community spans over 200 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace.
