National president of Vaughan-based organzation speaks out in wake of pair of incidents
The head of Canada’s Ahmadiyya community is speaking out in the wake of two violent attacks on Muslims in Southern Ontario.
“Such vicious acts are not in line with Canadian values,” Lal Khan Malik, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jam'at of Canada based in Vaughan, said in a news release Tuesday morning. “Regardless of faith we should all live by the motto, Love for All, Hatred for None.”
His statement comes after reports a Muslim woman was attacked and beaten by two males Monday afternoon while she was picking up her children from a school in the Don Mills Road-Eglinton Avenue area of Toronto.
Toronto police are treating the incident as a possible hate crime.
The two males approached the woman from behind then pulled her hijab and took her cellphone, police say.
One of the men allegedly told the woman she should go back to her country and that she was a terrorist, according to police.
The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
The incident follows an arson attack Saturday at the Masjid Al-Salaam mosque in Peterborough, which authorities in that city are investigating as a suspected hate crime.
Damage to the mosque has been estimated at $80,000, but an online crowd-funding campaign had raised more than $110,500 by Tuesday morning.
Both incidents come following Friday’s attacks in Paris by Islamic State gunmen that killed at least 129 people and injured more than 300.
