Canada: Muslim group in Maple part of #JeSuisHijabi campaign to combat discrimination

Last month, a woman in Toronto’s Flemingdon Park neighbourhood was attacked by two men as she walked to pick up her children from school. One of the suspects attempted to pull the hijab off the woman. The suspects are still outstanding.

A mosque in Maple will hold an open house Friday as part of a nationwide effort to show Canadians they should not fear women who choose to wear a headscarf.

Using a Twitter hashtag #JeSuisHijabi, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association, has launched a campaign to educate Canadians about the importance of the head covering in Islam and explain away stereotypes.

The campaign involves a public forum at Baitul Islam Mosque in Maple Friday afternoon as well as events at other Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at mosques across Ontario, and will allow members of the public to try on hijabs, “so people can see this is a very normal part of a Muslim woman’s life,” Malik said.

“There are a lot thoughts people have, apprehensions that perhaps Muslim women are forced to wear the hijab,” Hena Malik said on CP24 Friday. “That they’re not a part of society.”

Malik said members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at want Canadians to know that wearing a head covering is “not scary” or threatening in any way.

The campaign is also meant to start a dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims about the level of tolerance in Canadian society.

Last month, a woman in Toronto’s Flemingdon Park neighbourhood was attacked by two men as she walked to pick up her children from school. One of the suspects attempted to pull the hijab off the woman. The suspects are still outstanding.

In Peterborough, the city’s only mosque was deliberately set ablaze, causing $80,000 worth of damage. Both incidents drew widespread condemnation from politicians and community groups.

“With the recent hate crimes that have happened against Muslim women in Toronto and in other parts of the world, we felt that we want to allow people to understand who Muslim women are, we’re against the negative extremism that is happening in the world,” Malik said.
