Perspective: Islam's true teachings are about peace | Syed Tariq Ahmad

We do integrate and uphold the true Australian values by taking part in Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Clean Up Australia Day, feeding homeless, raising funds for the Red Cross and various other charities throughout the year.

I am a proud Australian Ahmadi Muslim and was very disappointed to read MP Andrew Hastie's comments that Islam needs to change ("Frydenberg opens new attack on Grand Mufti", November 30). Islam's teachings are crystal clear: if you kill one innocent human being, it's as if you have killed the whole of mankind. Islam teaches us to respect and abide by the laws of the country we live in.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Australia is doing everything possible to highlight the true teachings of Islam. We actively organise public dialogues and symposiums to combat the root causes of this complex problem. We do integrate and uphold the true Australian values by taking part in Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Clean Up Australia Day, feeding homeless, raising funds for the Red Cross and various other charities throughout the year.

The teachings of Islam are the solution to the problem. There is not a single aspect of Islam in Islamic State and none of their actions or ideologies portray any teachings that Prophet Muhammad practised or preached. There has never been a single terrorist from the Ahmadi Muslim Community in 130 years anywhere in the world.

The only way we can succeed is by staying united as one and making Islam part of the solution, rather than creating further division within society by rejecting those who are practising true Islam.
