Guatemala: Humanity First 6th Annual Gift of Sight Eye Camp benefits hundreds


The teams carried out a total of 70 surgeries including 31 Cataract Operations, 31 Pterygium Operations, and 8 Corneal Transplants.

The 6th annual eye camp in Guatemala took place under the Gift of Sight (GOS) initiative of Humanity First USA from March 18 to 24, 2016 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The patients GOS treated were transported from remote villages comprising a mix of local Guatemalans and Mayans who lack access to basic medical care and who represent the poorest socioeconomic sectors of the surrounding area.

David Gonzalez, Director of Humanity First Guatemala, worked for several months to prepare for the camp, and was supported by his team which included Abdul Sattar Khan (Amir and Missionary-in-Charge Guatemala) as well as Claudia Armas, Luisa Giron, Dario Samayoa, Estefany Amezquita, Deniss Ruiz and Sebastian Gonzalez.

This year’s Gift of Sight team included Dr. Charles Bouchard (Chairman of Ophthalmology, Loyola University Chicago), Dr. Tayyeba Ali (Cornea Specialist from Arkansas), Dr. Iftikhar Ali (Arkansas), their two daughters Zoya and Maryam, Dr. Ahsan M. Khan (Ophthalmologist, Los Angeles), Dr. Colby Brownlee (Ophthalmology Resident, Univ. of Arkansas), Dr.  Eilgius Lelis (Ophthalmologist, Chicago), Dr. Rima Patel (Opthhalmology Resident, Loyola Chicago),  Dr. Saqib Ali (Anesthesiologist, Cleveland) and various volunteers: Abdul Mateen Hasan, Daanish Salam, Clara Shelton, Olivia Anne Bouchard, Andrius Lelis, Shalin Govender, and Michael Ta.

Dr Rudy Gutierrez was the host ophthalmologist and we used his facility. Dr Gutierrez also assisted with some surgeries.

Dr. Tayyeba  Ali, as Co-Director of Gift of Sight USA, directed this year’s mission.

The teams carried out a total of 70 surgeries including 31 Cataract Operations, 31 Pterygium Operations, and 8 Corneal Transplants.

In addition, over 150 patients were examined and given various treatments.

Glasses were also dispensed.
