As an Ahmadiyya Muslim youth and great fan of AFL club Collingwood, it was shocking to see a sporting event being used to spread hate. To see my own club's fan holding up a banner against my religion saying "Go Pies! Stop the Mosques" was quite disturbing.
I would like to congratulate AFL chief Gillon McLachlan and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire for their strong stand on the matter.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim community has been very successful in using sports to engage Muslim youth in building bridges with other communities and religious groups.
We need to ensure that our sporting events are free from such hate campaigns to provide youth a safe environment.
