Erfurt - Minister President of Thuringia Bodo Ramelow looks into the plans for the construction of a mosque in Erfurt to help enrichment of religious life.
"Faith needs places where it can flourish, that goes for churches, mosques and Buddhist temples alike," Ramelow said on Thursday according to the German press agencies. The AfD in Thuringia had announced its intention to prevent construction.
Ramelow accused the right-wing populist party: "Now, that the numbers of refugees are going down, Islam is highlighted as danger for the homeland." This attitude was wrong and hollow.
Ramelow designated religious freedom as high constitutional principle. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community wants to build a mosque with dome and an eleven meter high minaret on the outskirts of Erfurt. However, for now it will only be a preliminary construction. (Dpa)
