East Syracuse, NY – The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has condemned the Orlando nightclub shooting and will hold a public prayer service for the victims, its president said Thursday morning.
"We condemn this senseless and horrific act of violence in the strongest possible terms," the community said Thursday in a press release. "Our hearts go out to the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with them as their neighbors and brothers and sisters in peace. Islam teaches reverence for all human life. This is a time to pray and act to stop such senseless violence in our nation."
Omar Mateen, who fatally shot 49 people and wounded 53 others in a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, was not driven to violence by his faith in Islam, said Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, president of the community.
"In the true teaching of Islam such acts have no place," he said. "Anyone who does not respect human life does not understand the true teaching."
Violence has no place in any religion, Iqbal said. "It's just some perverted minds that misinterpret the teaching and take a negative interpretation. I don't think they represent the true teachings, and that's true for all religions," he said.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889 and is now in more than 200 countries. It was established in the United States in 1920, making it among the oldest Muslim organizations in America, the group said. The local chapter has 55 members, Iqbal said.
The Syracuse community will hold a short study session of the Quran followed by a joint prayer service. The event begins at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Baitul Ihsan Mosque, 6650 Old Collamer Road, East Syracuse.
The community also is urging its members to break their Ramadan fasts and donate blood
