STATEMENT: Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Buffalo Chapter condemns nightclub shooting as 'horrific act of violence.'
The head of a local Muslim organization has issued a statement condemning "in the strongest possible terms" the Orlando nightclub shooting that he described as a "senseless and horrific act of violence."
In an announcement about plans for a prayer service for the victims of Sunday's shooting that claimed the lives of 50 people, Dr. Nasir Khan, president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Buffalo Chapter said: “Our hearts go out to the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with them as their neighbors and brothers and sisters in peace. Islam teaches reverence for all human life. This is a time to pray and act to stop such senseless violence in our nation.”
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Buffalo Chapter will hold a prayer service for the victims and their families at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Masjid Mahdi, 9610 Colvin Blvd., Niagara Falls. The service is open to the public.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community describes itself as a "dynamic, reformist and fast-growing international movement within Islam." Founded in 1889, the community spans more than 200 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is among the oldest American-Muslim organizations.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long- awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.
