The tragic and brutal murder of Mrs Jo Cox MP in June 2016 was followed by an international outpouring of grief.

The Charity Walk For Peace and Ahmadiyya elder's group, Majlis Ansarullah, joined forces to honour her legacy and made donations to some of the local charities that Mrs Jo Cox supported.

The first charity chosen was Batley Foodbank and a cheque for £1,500 was presented to them on the last day of Ramadan.

The second charity chosen was the Friends of Batley Station (FOBS) which was created by local Councillor Gwen Lowe and Jo Cox MP.  FOBS is entirely run by volunteers – most of whom are based in Batley. Their work has completely rejuvenated the station.  Previously the station was sad, unkempt and in danger of being closed down.

Following the death of Mrs Cox Councillor Gwen Lowe stated that although Jo Cox was no longer with us “She would always remain Vice-Chair of FOBS”

The Chair of FOBS, Councillor Gwen Lowe was contacted by Mr Arif Ahmad, Coordinator for Charity Walk Cheque Presentations for the North.  She was very happy to accept the donation and stated that the funds will be put towards the cost of a Coffee Shop which will open at Batley station in memory of Jo Cox MP

The presentation of the donation took place on the evening of 20 June 2016 and was attended by the volunteers of FOBS and representatives from Majlis Ansarullah and The Charity Walk For Peace.  The Regional Missionary for the North East Region – Sabahat Karim sahib – attended as a guest of Majlis Ansarullah.  The event was also attended by Mrs Fazila Aswat – Jo Cox’s Parliamentary Aide – who cradled her as she died

A short address was given by Mr Arif Ahmad about the charitable activities of the Charity Walk For Peace and Majlis Ansarullah.

Local Majlis Ansarullah members met and presented the volunteers with the cheque for £1,500 and some gift packs, flowers and chocolates.

Following the presentation Ms Jo Leadbetter, sister of Jo Cox, sent the following message to Mr Arif Ahmad

“Thank you for your lovely email and kind words. It has been an unbelievably tragic time for us as a family.  Thank you so much also for the generous donations from your organization to causes close to Jo's heart - Such kindness.”
