Members of Dewsbury Minster teamed up with the Spen Valley branch of The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association to hold a community tea party and raise funds for the Forget Me Not Children's Hospice.

Dewsbury Minster dates back to the 13th century and was recently named as one of Britain's 500 Holiest Sites

Local dignitaries and faith leaders, including the MP of Dewsbury, Paula Sherriff, Former Mayors of Kirklees, Councillors Eric Firth and Paul Kane, and Batley Councillor Gwen Lowe, were joined by members of the Minster congregation and the local community at the tea party which was held between 12pm and 2pm on Sunday 31 July.

A range of food and drinks was provided including cakes, samosas, pakoras, sandwiches and chocolates.  Local businesses donated raffle prizes and guests were also treated to henna painting and nail art.

The Forget Me Not Children's Hospice supports children with life shortening conditions throughout the West Yorkshire Area.  The Charity and associated supporters are holding tea parties throughout the month of August to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

Sylvia Turner, who is responsible for the hire of function rooms at the Minster, said that the event was very good for the Hospice and that members of the Dewsbury Minster congregation who attended the event enjoyed it.

Paula Sherriff, MP, stated that it was an absolute pleasure to attend and support the event raising essential funds for the Hospice.

Roy Parry, a long-standing volunteer for the Hospice, explained that £3.8 million is required each year to run the Hospice.  This year has been very difficult as the Hospice was closed for a while due to a fire.  He thanked the organisers “for arranging a wonderful event and raising a fabulous amount of money” and also praised the exchange of ideas at the event.

Arif Ahmad, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Spen Valley, thanked everyone for their generosity and stated that the event was a great example of people from differing backgrounds working together for the greater good.  “Some of my Muslim friends who have lived all their life in Dewsbury have never visited the Minster or any type of church.  They were really happy to attend the event and impressed by the Minster – both the building and the team who run it”

Over 100 guests attended the event and £400 was raised for the charity
