The opponents of the first new construction of a mosque in Thuringia, a state in east-central Germany, presented a compromise proposal at a hearing before the planning commission.
If the Ahmadiyya community wants to build an Islamic center in the Erfurt district of Marbach, then at least the minaret and the dome should be done away with, said the petitioner against mosque construction on Tuesday.
This is a "good faith proposal," he said adding, "Marbach doesn't have to admit a mosque with a minaret and a dome?"
Members of the Ahmadiyya community did not even live in Erfurt-Marbach, said the petitioner.
Supporters of the mosque argue that minarets are not just decorations on a real estate, but rather a symbol of Islam.
The planned new mosque construction has been controversial in Thuringia for months. It was only in December that the municipality introduced a change to the construction project. Thus, the mosque is to be built at another location further in Erfurt-Marbach. It is no longer in a commercial zone on a federal road, but on the southern access road to the village. The Erfurt city administration had positively assessed a construction request for a property.
Compared to the old location, the minaret will only be eight meters high, not as originally planned.
