Well done to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, who started the new year by helping fellow Glaswegians in need

A group of young Glasgow Muslims ushered in 2017 by giving back to their community, cleaning up the streets and giving out food and clothing to those who need it.

Youths from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) Glasgow celebrated Hogmanay by handing out much-needed items to the homeless.

And they were back up at the crack of dawn for communal prayers, followed by a big street clean, bin bags and brooms in hand.

Shoaib Khan, youth leader for Scotland, said: "Our passion, as proud Scottish Muslims, comes from our faith which teaches us to serve those in need regardless of their faith, gender or background.

“As Muslims we believe that cleanliness is part of our faith. The clean-up will not only instil these values into our youngsters, it will also motivate them to become model citizens.”

The homeless and clean up campaigns were just two of the AMYA’s projects throughout the winter break - the group also organised blood donation sessions and charity collections, as well as visiting children and the elderly in hospitals and nursing homes.
