The Ahmadiyya community in Mymensingh has started a police case over the attack on the imam of one of its mosque.

Late on Monday, unidentified men hacked Mostafizur Rahman while he was leaving the mosque at a village in Ishwarganj Upazila after conducting prayers.

Locals managed to nab one of the attackers, who was later identified as Abdul Ahad Mohammad Ullah and handed him to police, reports bdnews24.com.

Ishwarganj police OC Badrul Alam Khan said the community's spokesperson Hajari Al Munir filed a case with them Tuesday night.

The case accuses Ahad and two other unidentified persons for attempt on the imam's life, he said.

The victim, who was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) the same day, has been transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday as his condition deteriorated.

Suspect Ahad, who was beaten by the locals before handing over to police, is now being treated at the MMCH.

Ahad told the media at the hospital that he along with two others perpetrated the attack due to the community's difference of opinion over Islam.

Mymensingh's Superintendent of Police Syed Nurul Islam confirmed that he made a similar statement during initial interrogations.
