USA: 9/11 Blood Drive at Chino's Baitul Hameed Mosque Nets More Than Units of Blood

A nice woman joined us for dinner afterwards and invited us to her church. The local TV media stopped by, sat around after for a chat, and the cameraman was teaching filming techniques to one of our youth.

"The America we wish and hope for our children was on full display"

This Sept. 11, I saw a snapshot of the America I love, on Patriots Day no less. Our mosque, Baitul Hameed, in Chino, hosted their annual “Muslims for Life” blood drive to honor the lives lost on 9/11. In attendance was a Jewish rabbi who thanked us for our service. A couple came in after seeing the Blood Drive sign out front and volunteered to donate blood. They told me they had never been in a mosque before and were thankful that we were hosting this effort. The chief of police of Chino stopped by, rolled up her sleeves, and also donated blood. Local Congresswoman Norma Torres sent a congratulatory proclamation. As more men and women ventured in from the public to donate blood, I could see their kids, Muslims and Christians, Hispanic and white and Pakistani, running around playing. A nice woman joined us for dinner afterwards and invited us to her church. The local TV media stopped by, sat around after for a chat, and the cameraman was teaching filming techniques to one of our youth.

For a few hours, adults and children of different races and religions, mixed with police and media and faith leaders and government officials, all gathered at a mosque in Southern California to honor the victims of 9/11. By evening’s end, 42 pints of blood were collected, which could save up to 120 lives. And at the same time, the America we wish and hope for our children was on full display.
