Vatican City: Pope Francis declares 2017 “wasted and wounded" year of "death, lies and injustices"

'We humans in so many ways ruined and hurt it with works of death, with lies and injustices'

Pope Francis on Sunday issued a year-end message calling on people to take responsibility for their actions in 2017, saying the year was filled with "death, lies and injustices" [The Hill]

At his last public event of the year, an evening vespers service in St. Peter’s Basilica, the pontiff said that humanity had “wasted and wounded” the year “in many ways with works of death, with lies and injustices”.

While war was the most obvious sign of “unrepentant and absurd pride”, many other transgressions had caused “human, social and environmental degradation”. [Reuters]

The Pope did not reference any specific events or individuals in his remarks. But the stern address closed off a year in which he often spoke out directly against actions that he saw as an affront to humanity. [Newsweek]

Francis added: "We want to, and must assume, before God, our brothers and creation our responsibility" for the harm.

Despite the gloom, Francis said "gratitude prevails" thanks to those who "co-operate silently for the common good." He singled out parents and educators who try to raise young people with a sense of responsible ethics. [CBC]

Over the past twelve months, Francis said, he’s felt “sympathy and gratitude for all those persons who, every day, contribute with small but precious gestures to the common good, who seek to do their duty as well as possible.”
