The second test match in preparation for the national handball teams’ Zone 3 in Niamey, Niger will come on Friday.

The test match will be played at the Ahmadiyya High School on Bushrod Island, Monrovia.

Liberia is expected to send two teams: the first team should comprise players who were born in 1998 and upwards and the second team should also comprise players who were born in the year 2000 and upwards.

The two teams will comprise 14 players each (with two coaches each).

The two teams are presently training at the University of Liberia sports ground on Capitol Hill and Liberia National Handball Association (LNHA) officials say they are happy for the level of interest shown by the players.

According to the head coach of the national handball association, Phillip Mansaray, he is overwhelmed by the great interest demonstrated by his players. He expressed optimism that they will receive the needed support for the teams’ plan for the Niger trip, which is from March 25-30.

LNHA President Mayson Saweler told the Daily Observer yesterday that he is excited about the enthusiasm among the players.

Originally the International Handball Federation (IHF) will provide sponsorship to enable the two teams to travel by road to Niger, through Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

“It will be a tiresome journey by road,” Saweler said, hence the Liberian government through the Ministry of Youth & Sports is working to ensure that the two teams travel by air for the tournament.

According to experts, handball is a popular, spectacular, dynamic and exciting sport that requires speed, strength, power, stamina, endurance, fitness and, above all, teamwork which is played by over 15 million people in approximately 140 countries around the world.

The game is fast, dynamic and the players need to be fit and work for the team. The sport has a relatively rapid learning curve because the basic movements build on natural human movements such as jumping, running, throwing and the variations of these, according to a handbook on the sport.

It added, “Handball is a challenging sport both mentally and physically and this is why it is a fascinating and attractive game! It keeps you fit, healthy. It promotes diverse tactics and strategies. It is a dynamic, fast and fun sport.”
