Perspective: Families together in the paradise | Syed Sajid Ahmad

It is good news for families that they will be brought together in the next world. No wonder that life is paradise in this temporary world, too, when families are bonded together.

No one gets to choose their parents and, thus, their family of grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

People inherit many things from their parents--the contour of their bodies, skin color and many other traits. They naturally carry or develop a special kind of love and affection for each other. A family get-together is a natural joy unparalleled by other affiliations. It surpasses friendships and business liaisons.

As people grow, some remain attached to their families and some drift away. It's often a job or diverse ambitions and interests that separate them. Sometimes it's political or other ideological differences that pull them apart. In some cases, people just cannot get along due to differences in their temperaments.

Some years ago, I visited the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' visitor center in Salt Lake City. The church believes that families of believers will be gathered together in the next world; therefore, they see value in collecting genealogy information in a large library in the complex.

The Quran presents a similar scenario.

"And those who believe and whose children follow them in faith — with them shall We join their children. And We will not diminish anything from the reward of their works. Every man stands pledged for what he has earned." (52:21/22)
"Gardens of Eternity. They [possessors of various traits enumerated in previous verses] shall enter them [Gardens of Eternity] and also those who are righteous from among their fathers, and their wives and their children. And angels shall enter unto them from every gate, saying 'Peace be unto you, because you were steadfast; behold how excellent is the reward of the final Abode!'" [13:23/24/25]
"'You who believed in Our Signs and submitted, enter ye the Garden, you and your wives, honored and happy.' To them will be passed round dishes of gold and cups, and therein will be all that the souls desire and in which the eyes delight. 'And therein will you abide." (43:70-72].

It is good news for families that they will be brought together in the next world. No wonder that life is paradise in this temporary world, too, when families are bonded together.

Broken families are a matter of great concern in this world. The natural compassion found among families can help greatly in advancement of a family member in trouble, be it a health issue, an economic matter or any other worldly struggle.

The Quran promises to bring families together in the next world even when they differ in the level of their piety and good deeds. Over time, souls will adapt, learn and advance, and all will enjoy the next world according to the levels of their development.

These verses also elicit that the houris, female companions of male dwellers of paradise, will be none other than their own wives from this temporal world. Therefore, when they will be given a fruit, they will say, this is what was given us before (2:25/26).
